    Integrated Al2O3:Er3+ zero-loss optical amplifier and power splitter with 40 nm bandwidth

    A combined planar lossless optical amplifier and 1x2 power splitter device has been realized in Al2O3:Er3+ on silicon. Net internal gain was measured over a wavelength range of 40 nm across the complete telecom -band (1525–1565 nm). Calculations predict net gain in a combined amplifier and 1x4 power splitter device over the same wavelength range for a total injected pump power as low as 30 mW

    Monolithic integration of Al2O3:Er3+ amplifier technology with passive silicon-on-insulator waveguides is demonstrated. A signal enhancement of >7 dB at 1533 nm wavelength is obtained. The straightforward wafer-scale fabrication process, which includes reactive co-sputtering and subsequent reactive ion etching, allows for parallel integration of multiple amplifier and laser sections with silicon or other photonic circuits on a chip

    170 GBit/s transmission in an erbium-doped waveguide amplifier on silicon

    Signal transmission experiments were performed at 170 Gbit/s in an integrated Al2O3:Er3+Al_2O_3:Er^{3+} waveguide amplifier to investigate its potential application in high-speed photonic integrated circuits. Net internal gain of up to 11 dB was measured for a continuous-wave 1532 nm signal under 1480 nm pumping, with a threshold pump power of 4 mW. A differential group delay of 2 ps between the TE and TM fundamental modes of the 5.7-cm-long amplifier was measured. When selecting a single polarization open eye diagrams and bit error rates equal to those of the transmission system without the amplifier were observed for a 1550 nm signal encoded with a 170 Gbit/s return-to-zero pseudo-random 2712^{7}-1 bit sequence

    Low threshold monocrystalline Nd:(Gd,Lu)<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> channel waveguide laser

    We report the first waveguide laser based on a rare-earth-doped sesquioxide. A 2 μm thick lattice matched Nd(0.5%):(Gd,Lu)2O3{(Gd, Lu)_2O_3} film with a nearly atomically flat surface has been epitaxially grown on a Y2O3Y_2O_3 substrate, using pulsed laser deposition. The film has been structured with reactive ion etching and a rib channel waveguide laser has been realized. Laser radiation at 1075 nm and 1079 nm has been observed under 820-nm pumping. The laser possesses a threshold power of about 0.8 mW and a preliminary slope efficiency of 0.5% versus incident pump power. A maximum output power of 1.8 mW has been obtained for 370 mW incident pump power

    Age at first birth in women is genetically associated with increased risk of schizophrenia

    Prof. Paunio on PGC:n jäsenPrevious studies have shown an increased risk for mental health problems in children born to both younger and older parents compared to children of average-aged parents. We previously used a novel design to reveal a latent mechanism of genetic association between schizophrenia and age at first birth in women (AFB). Here, we use independent data from the UK Biobank (N = 38,892) to replicate the finding of an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women, and to estimate the genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in women stratified into younger and older groups. We find evidence for an association between predicted genetic risk of schizophrenia and AFB in women (P-value = 1.12E-05), and we show genetic heterogeneity between younger and older AFB groups (P-value = 3.45E-03). The genetic correlation between schizophrenia and AFB in the younger AFB group is -0.16 (SE = 0.04) while that between schizophrenia and AFB in the older AFB group is 0.14 (SE = 0.08). Our results suggest that early, and perhaps also late, age at first birth in women is associated with increased genetic risk for schizophrenia in the UK Biobank sample. These findings contribute new insights into factors contributing to the complex bio-social risk architecture underpinning the association between parental age and offspring mental health.Peer reviewe
